Not only is the plot crazy and compulsively readable, but Sutanto also delves into Indo-Chinese-American culture in such a careful and respectful way as if she is portraying her own family. It's so silly that part of you is questioning it the whole time and yet you are so on board, you cannot stop reading. a telenovela/soap opera/mystery/thriller/romantic comedy/farce hybrid that has you eye-rolling, guffawing, snorting, and gasping along with Meddy and her Aunties and their HIJINKS!! Reception Įditors at AllMusic Guide scored this album four out of five stars, with reviewer Timothy Monger noting that Ray continues to explore a variety of American roots music traditions "without letting them define her" and pointing out several tracks with differing emotions, genres, and collaborators that create a solid musical statement as an album. Unlike those two releases, she also previewed this album by releasing several tracks as lead singles this was useful for band cohesion during the COVID-19 pandemic. To record the music, Ray worked with many of the same musicians that she used on her 2014 release Goodnight Tender and 2018's Holler, traveling to many studios across America to collaborate and recording live to tape. Ray was also inspired by social justice movements occurring during the recording period. This album also includes the explicit references to politics and activism that have marked her career as a musician, and at the point of recording, Ray was looking for healing in the United States and the American South in particular. If It All Goes South is part of a series of albums that Ray has released that explore Americana and country music. He rewrote a number of stories, made light revisions on others, cut twelve tales altogether, and added four new ones to round out the collection. When given the chance to rerelease the out-of-print collection in 1955, Bradbury seized the opportunity to revisit his first book and correct the things he deemed inadequate. Besides a pricey limited-edition reprint in 2001, Dark Carnival exists as a literary apparition.Īnd yet many people have read some of Dark Carnival without knowing it. There’s good reason few readers, even those well versed in Bradbury’s work, are unfamiliar with Dark Carnival: Arkham House, a small press out of Sauk City, Wisconsin, published the book in a modest run of 3,112 copies the book went out of print just a few years later. “The Dubliners of American Gothic”-that’s how Stephen King referred to Ray Bradbury’s first book, the little-known 1947 short-story collection, Dark Carnival. Ray Bradbury’s The October Country turns sixty. Actually, if you're willing to 'read' it out of order, bounce around at will, I do recommend it. But one of the earliest exercises is "This is a Thought Garden. I think the book would be better if it broke open my brain first, *then* gave me blank pages to be inspiring. My origami boat, even after googling for better instructions, is *terrible.* When I was a teen or college student I might have been able to do these exercises, but not now so much. But I want to be better at that stuff, whether it's crocheting or sketching or writing or whatever. So, I'm seriously not artistically creative, and unsuccessful when I try to be crafty.
